In recent developments, Amazon, the world-renowned tech behemoth, has bolstered its commitment to AI, believed to be a ground-breaking force of our era. The company has recently invested an additional $2.75 billion in Anthropic AI, a thriving AI startup, after initially investing $1.25 billion last year. Consequently, Amazon now has a minority stake in the startup. A move that ties in perfectly with Amazon’s audacious foray into AI and symbolizes the escalating power struggle between AI rivals, most notably, Anthropics AI chatbot, Claude, and ChatGPT.
Anthropic, with its grand debut in 2021, owes its genesis to members of OpenAI. In a short span, it has carved a space for itself in the competitive AI terrain, having recently released Claude 3 - its most powerful iteration yet. Apart from its dialogue capabilities, Claude 3 has also showcased an adeptness at image analysis.
Furthermore, Anthropic, in line with its commitment to superior customer service, has signed up Amazon Web Services (AWS) as their main provider for critical workloads. Initiatives like safety research and the development of future foundation models stand to benefit considerably from this alliance. Anthropic also intends to utilise AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips for building, training, and deploying future models. Not restricting its AI ambitions to minority stakes in startups, Amazon launched its AI-powered assistant, Amazon Q. Built specifically for businesses, Amazon Q exhibits a broad suite of capabilities, arming it with an edge in problem-solving, content creation, and a host of other operations.
However, Amazon is not the sole tech titan captivated by Anthropics potential. Google made a foray into this space last October with a $500 million investment, vowing to surge this to $2 billion. The proliferation of these investments signifies a burgeoning trend of AI integration in tech majors and forecasts a robust future for AI startups.
Nevertheless, like every coin having two sides, Anthropic has faced its share of controversy. Earlier this year, Anthropic found itself embedded in a lawsuit instituted by the Universal Music Group (UMG). The label accused the AI startup of illicit usage and duplication of copyrighted works during its AI model training phase.
In response to this, Anthropic has updated its commercial terms of service, asserting that no client data is utilized for AI training and that it stands prepared to shield its customers from copyright infringement arising from the authorized use of their services.
